Notes of the Season

I love Advent and Christmas music. Advent literally means, “coming” and nothing will hail the holiday season like listening to Christmas music. For me it is Manheim Steamroller’s Christmas album with the black background and yellow lit up tree. This what the tape cassette my parents played while we decorated the Christmas tree as a family each year. My family indulges in the same practice, though I don’t think they love it as much as I do.

The music we listen to shapes and molds so much of who we are and that becomes incredible apparent during the holiday season. So, this Advent we are going to take time to dwell in the songs and music of the season and what they tell us about ourselves, each other and most especially God. We will talk about hymns, sacred songs not sung as a congregation (think O Holy Night) and even a secular song or two.

Even as we collectively reflect upon the songs of the season, I pray you are inspired to pause and consider alongside your loved ones, what songs matter to you, why and perhaps what they tell you about how God shows up in the world.

Advent Daily Devotionals, reflecting on Advent Carols and more are available in the church narthex.

May this season be one of reflection and joy for all the world.

Pr. Hannah
