Faith, Amid Fear & Uncertainty

“You are my hiding-place and my shield; I hope in your word.”

Psalm 119:114

During our Annual Summer Book Club, Minneola was invited to read The Hiding Place, the true story of Corrie ten Boom, a Dutch underground conspirator during the German occupation of World War II. It is a harrowing tale of faith in the face of a fascist and hateful regime.

In the conversation that occurred in July, I realized how so many of us are wrestling with our own questions of faith in this current time of fear and uncertainty. What does it mean to be a follower of Christ right now in our church, families, communities and world? It isn’t an easy answer that is for sure, but Corrie ten Boom left me with a couple of pillars of her faith lived out, in a time of great upheaval. Guideposts I hope to carry into this next chapter of my own faith journey:

  • God’s love is not given because of our strength or achievements but simply because we are God’s beloved creatures

  • When human effort has done its best and failed, God’s power is still free to work

  • Darker the circumstances the brighter God’s Word and promise shine

  • The power and love needed to transform this world come from God alone

As we continue to walk side by side with each other and Christ as twenty first century Christians, may we hold onto these lessons learned and lived so often throughout our collective history. We may be incapable of changing the world, but God, through the love of Jesus Christ is never so limited. It is in that promise of God’s action for good in this world, we find our hiding place, our shield and our hope.
